Getting Serious about Zero Carbon.

Context is key.

The summits, protests and political dog fights have so far missed the point and been ineffective. Why? Carbon levels have gone up and we are no closer to a real solution to our fossil fuel dependency. Whilst I buy the ideal that we “should” be able to live on the energy nature has provided, we cannot do so without inflicting massive amounts of suffering on the very poor.  Our energy need vastly outweighs our renewable energy supply.

Humanity needs energy to avoid:

  • Famine
  • Fuel Poverty
  • War
  • Pollution

Climate Change itself is insignificant in comparison to the human cost of War or Famine.  To avoid most of the above we need to get serious about moving to a zero carbon economy to improve our prospects as a species

There is massive investment in home insulation, advertising and lobbying for efficiency. Yet making a carbon based economy more efficient does nothing to reduce our reliance the fuel itself.

This will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Carbon loby, who I believe have the best of intentions. Efficiency savings for a Carbon economy are a massive waste of time, money and indeed energy. In order to achieve an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 the fact is developed economies will have reduce their carbon emissions to zero. Zero!

It is not possible to do so without huge investment in energy innovation. The ‘clean’ and renewable energy sources have so far failed to yield results despite decades of development. Even the electric car will not be our saviour. It may make us feel better, but that electricity still comes from a coal, gas or nuclear power plant.

Humanity is not currently long on effective solutions to this problem. The innovation investment has thus far been woefully inadequate. Spending on Clean Coal, Nuclear Fission or other more radical innovation by Governments is a fraction of what it needs to be in order to see any real progress.

The problem for the politician is that opposing the Green lobby is very difficult without marginalising yourself. The opposition to the Green lobby has done itself no favours by being in denial about the need to move away from a carbon economy. Allowing mainstream thinking to be influenced by fringe solutions.

Any workable solution requires significant government investment over the long term. The Cap and Trade policies have already failed as a revenue generating exercise & frankly have only caused political squabbles. The only possible solution is for the free market to recognise the massive opportunity the zero carbon economy is for the first to achieve a workable model.

Our carbon based fuel is finite and dwindling. Unless we find a solution we will have war, poverty & ultimately the slow death of humanity. Now is the time for us to use our best weapon against the odds. Our free market system. Generation Y has no adequate representation on the political level. We gave the world Facebook and twitter, now we have to change the political lexicon to deal with reality.

Energy Innovation needs a voice that is willing to take on the “Renewable is the only solution” argument & at the same time re-articulate the need to move from Fossil Fuel in context of the REAL consequences.

Making Life Easier with Payments

The banking sector is unwieldy for anyone to navigate, especially those without experience in it. The sheer amount of Compliance, legal issues & Audit involved is immense and often a shock to the uninitiated.

What Jack Dorsey is doing with square is interesting much more for the payments platform than the Magstripe reader. Twitter knows how to be an Open API and unleash 3rd party apps. What they don’t know is how to navigate the Audit minefield. Security is paramount in the financial world, and often the reason their technology lags behind other sectors.

Change in the financial sector works in decades not years. If Square can succeed where PayPal almost did a decade ago, by breaking the dominance of Visa and Mastercard then we might just get Payments as easy as a Foursquare check in.

History teaches us that old Gatekeepers don’t give up power easy though.

Where does Apple fit into this? They have a tendency to build everything themselves, to a fault. Apple Video just has not taken off, while Hulu, Boxee and Youtube all threaten to leave it for dust. Apple entering the Payments sector could well produce the same result.

Somewhere between the OpenID/ OAuth discussion, Square, Paypal X & NFC is the answer. Who can put all of those jigsaw pieces together is anyone’s guess. The list of people trying is astronomical though.

The Gap Between Education & Career

No matter how well crafted your image, realise that it only exists to serve those with a high school mentality. Your peers in business have moved beyond the visual system of measurement, and while able to observe a well presented image, this is not what gets you noticed. This inbalance leads to some confusion for your early 20s. “My image is made, I am cool, but why don’t I have what I want yet?”

To employers, and the gatekeepers of social mobility; the older generations… Your attraction is your potential, desire & unique talent. Now what separates you from everyone else is more important than what makes you the same as everyone else.

Your identity will become a mix of who you always were & who you want to be. How much of that you choose to display publicly will depend on your audience. You can’t please all of the people all of the time. Find your passion, become good at it & accept that not everyone will agree. On that journey you will find inspiration, happiness & fulfilment.

Too much Trust, Too little Privacy?

In the rush to implement these services and quickly get value from them the public happily ticked a checkbox saying “Allow my personal data to be used” which were part of the terms of service.  In itself a baby step from the previous way in which data had been sold as a commodity.  Yet by it has become clear the proper checks and balances may not have been in place.

The apathy to data security among the general population is currently far more dangerous than many of the services who have access to that data.  I have never been a fearful chap, nor do I intend to be.  If anything this is a dose of good old fashioned mundane reality.  Nothing is perfect & no matter how much facebook or twitter fend off privacy concerns they are not held to account in the same way the banking sector is for example.

The fact is that the pressure on these new behemoths of Social Media is tiny in comparison to the overwhelming amount of support they are getting from Venture Capital & Investors. The public too are happy in a world where these services have real value and no cost.  Perhaps then, that is why we find it so easy to look the other way.

At some point in the not too distant future, we are going to have to answer the question.  Do we value privacy; at all?  In real terms it won’t be around forever, and in general the trend has been a useful one.  Chris Brogan notes that Trust Agents thrive under public scrutiny & it can be a very profitable way to build your brand.

If we assumed (and its quite a leap) that everyone working for every Government agency and large Social Media outlet had the slightest inkling of temptation to use the masses of data they have access to.  Even then, the door is open to massive amounts of Fraud & 3rd party mis-management.  If anything companies using data poorly will likley be of more pain to the average Social Media user than abuse.

The fact remains however, the door is open for abuse.  No matter how much we trust a company, it is on our own best interest to ensure we state emphatically what the boundaries are.  Will we see Big Brother & Communism any time soon? No.  Could this be a problem for you in your daily life if left unchecked? Yes.

What action can you / should you take? We all know a spam and phising email when we see one.  It is similar learning curve with social media.  Facebook gives you a certain degree of control over what other people can see.  The key point is to stay informed.  With geo-location Services I know where you are all the time, with facebook I know what parties you will attend and who with.

The Tough Part

How are you doing with your 2010 goals? This is the tough bit, the cold January where you don’t want to go outside & the TV is far more inviting.

January 9th isn’t far into 2010, but usually by this point I would have given up on my goals & allowed myself to slack.  Well not this year Mr.  The new Blog is all but finished, I managed a huge book this week and am just about to attend the gym for the 3rd time.

Today’s word of the day is Consistency.  Now is the perfect time to Crush it

A collection of Thoughts

Stuff I found today.

A Hamster with a Hat

A really cool Hip Hop Website, I like it’s simplicity. Blip.fm is Ego DJ based. HipHop DX is crowd sourced filtering, we will see more of this in the near future.

The definitive guide on how to use twitter. You’d be daft not to read this if twitter is still a bit alien to you.

Hot on the heels of Google buying a Mobile Ad Platform, Apple buy a Mobile Ad Platform. If these two are moving into Mobile in a big way, maybe you should too ;o)

Nobody told me Eminem and Lil Wayne did an amazing track? Awesome.

The Key to finding Work: Motivation

Youth Unemployment has recently reached a Record High. The problem appears to be at least partially systemic. We need a boost, a leg up or some help as a Generation

Why is Life After Uni like Treading Water?
The strategies for becoming truly effective at job hunting take time to learn.

When you watch a child learn to walk, the start out very shaky and unsure… but for some reason they just keep trying. They are driven to complete the evolutionary imperative. They learn through trial and error and playing. They are rewarded for effort and quickly achieve.

Now take a young adult fresh out of university facing the job market. They are scared to take the first step and fear failure. Despite being an indictment of our education system, it also shows a key flaw in becoming an adult. We lose our will to fail, to play and to try. It has been proven that if you reward achievement you create students who fear failure. If you reward effort you create students who are less likely to.

How can you Get closer to the Job you Want?
Firstly you want to Identify your Passion & Make a list of the type of jobs you can tolerate. Could you work in an office? Do brands excite you? Maybe you prefer to create?

With most industries people can open the door, but they won’t do that until your visible to them. Without Passion and Focus it is very difficult to ever progress from the child on Shaky legs scenario. The sad fact is most people don’t try to improve their CV or Career until they are out of work. You may not always be passionate about the work in front of you, but if you can see the path in front of you & break that down into achievable steps you are much more likely to get there.

Such is Life
To find a blog post talking about how to get motivation means two things 1) The Author probably should have been doing something else 2) Nobody is around to give you a kick up the ass, so you gotta do it yourself.

Hard Work brings rewards. Open up that CV Document, do a Google Search and see how you can improve it. Ask anyone who will listen if they know about your passion & when you’re done buy yourself a really tasty cookie!

Goals for 2010

Inspired by @Chrisbrogan and his prolific nature of setting wildly ambitious targets and then hitting them, it seemed wortwhile to list a few goals for the Record. Someone on twitter earlier mentioned that “2010 is starting like a fairytale, with the snow”.

Behind every fairytale story there is a tremendous amount of hard work and slog involved. A few names? Simon Cowell, Duncan Bannetine, Alan Sugar, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg. All of them achieved success in different ways at different times. Yet they all share a passion for what they do, and understanding of what they need to do next, and the drive to be the best.

Do you?

Goal 1: Move the blog to wordpress. End of January
Why? It’s not essential, and it would mean an outlay on webspace once again, but it also gives me access to create the kind of online presence I really want. Moving from beginner to intermediate in the blog world.

Goal 2: Read 52 Books this year. Year End
Why? Despite my youthful rebellion against books, I’ve always been an avid reader. Maybe it is something you have not taken to. Books sound like the most boring and nerdy thing in the world… but one day I promise you, if you are on a journey for success a book will help you get there.

Goal 3: Achieve financial Target. Year End
Why? Like many under 30, money management isn’t a strong point. I can’t exactly plead ignorance either. I know how banking works. If you don’t it’s worth getting educated on the difference between Credit and Debit. Direct Debits may seem like a pain, but they are worthwhile in the long run. Maybe you are like me, and lack a little dicipline

Goal 4: Attend 10 Conferences / Tweetups
Why? People are the real spice of life. Amazing things happen when you make the effort to get out there and enter their world.

What are your goals? I gave myself 40 points for setting 4 pretty tough goals there.

Points make prizes 1000 Points for every Goal Achieved.

How will you do?
